  1. What role does music have in the novel?  Hank discovers that he can play the guitar?  How does he react to his musical ability?  How do others react to his musical ability?  Why do you think Hank wants to get involved in the “battle of the bands?”
  2. Henry David Thoreau appears to Hank several times throughout the novel.  When does he appear?  What does he say or do?  How does Hank react to his appearances?
  3. At the end of chapter 10, Hank says, “No matter what I’ve done or who I am, it’s clear that this funny talented, pretty girl likes me.  So maybe, just maybe, when it comes right down to it, I’m not such a bad person after all.”  Why is Hank unsure if he’s a bad person?  What clues does the author give that he may have done something wrong?  Why does it matter to Hank that he is good?
